Emily Parr - Interim Principal
Emily Parr, a longtime Ocean Avenue Elementary School educator with more than 25 years experience in education, is leading the school as interim principal for 2026-27. Emily, who most recently was the school’s assistant principal, is committed to providing steady leadership, maintaining a positive school culture, and supporting student achievement.
Emily has worked in education at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. She is passionate about forming deep, meaningful relationships with students and families, and is excited to continue to contribute to the rich, diverse Portland community. She has been with the Portland Public Schools since 2014, starting as a special education teacher/special education liaison at Ocean and then becoming assistant principal at the school in 2022. Before that, Emily taught multiple subjects in a variety of settings, ranging from a private therapeutic day treatment program in South Portland to a large urban high school in the United Kingdom.
Hana Tallan - Interim Assistant Principal
Hana Tallan, an experienced educator who has dedicated herself to helping Portland Public Schools students succeed for three decades, is Ocean Avenue Elementary School’s interim assistant principal for 2026-2027. She is focused on fostering a safe, positive environment that supports teaching and learning.
Hana came to this country from Somalia in 1990 and joined the district in 1996 as an educational technician. She became a teacher at East End Community School, then served as an interim assistant principal at Longfellow Elementary School before returning to her teaching role at EECS.
Hana graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and became a certified teacher in 2019. She earned a master’s degree in education leadership from USM in 2025.
