About Ocean Avenue School
Ocean Avenue Elementary School opened to 440 Portland students in 2011.  It has 23 classrooms, including two district-wide, self-contained special education programs. Our building is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, with sustainable design features such as ample natural light, and a roof garden for natural cooling. Our wind-and-sun-powered outdoor sculptures are noted by all visitors: CLICK HERE for more information. The 1940 social-realism murals in our main hallway were reinstalled from the old Nathan Clifford school and celebrate Maine's marine and agricultural traditions: CLICK HERE to find out more.
What makes our school special?  Ocean Ave School is an authorized IB World School, the first to offer the Primary Years Program in Maine since 2016. This framework helps us guide our students toward becoming independent, inquiring, internationally-minded learners. For more information on our IB PYP program, look under Academics on this website. Ocean Ave School is a supportive and collaborative community where students and learning are at the center of our focus.   We are able to use our staff strategically to meet the needs of all of our students.  Ocean Avenue School uses Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) to create procedures and routines for all students.  Our PBIS school-wide rules are: We are Responsible, We are Respectful, and We are Safe.  We recently introduced mindfulness practice and the Second Step program to build our students' social-emotional, self-monitoring capacity. Our school has state-of-the-art technology in each classroom with document cameras, smart boards, and LCD projectors.  We have desk-top computers in K and first grade classrooms, and Chromebooks for each student in second through fifth grades.
What kinds of parent support and resources does our school provide?  We have a very active PTO.  Our parents are engaged and very supportive of all of our students.  Ocean Avenue School has regular newsletters, our website, and teacher updates to keep a strong home-school connection.  Each grade level holds a curriculum night for parents, in addition to our open house evening.  Parents provide a variety of afterschool enrichment activities for our students.  For parents and guardians whose home language is other than English, we have multilingual supports including district community liaisons, and cultural brokers who consult with teachers and administrators.
How are we preparing our students for educational success?  Ocean Avenue School believes in setting high standards for all students and providing multiple supports for students to reach these standards.  We have a strong literacy team focused on supporting all students to read on grade level.  We have several teams who monitor each student, their academic achievement, and support plans. We offer a highly-recognized English Language staff and program for our students who are new to English, a growing resource in our library of books in and about languages other than English, and a school-wide focus on celebrating home languages and cultures. In 2018, we introduced Spanish as a second language to our first graders, a curriculum that builds Spanish acquisition through fifth grade.
